Winter Riding Tips!

muddytrailsATTENTION TRAIL USERS: Please Read!

Please be aware of ever constantly changing conditions of the trails during the winter months. Often times the trail surface will be frozen and solid in the morning but thawed and wet during the afternoon. Please note that if you are leaving tracks on the trails while hiking or riding or there is mud on your shoes or bike, then you are doing damage to the trail.

Sometimes it's best to just turn around and call it a day. Damage to the trail is very difficult to repair and can be considered vandalism/destruction of park property. All trails are maintained by volunteers not the Land Manager.

Thank you for your help!!!

Successful November Workday

A hearty group just shy of twenty workers tackled a lengthy reroute on T-N-T from the intersection of the Northside trail to the top of the Prairie Grass field. By 1 pm the corridor was cleared, de-staubed, benchcut (where needed) and 4 vertical armored creek crossings were completed. With temperatures in the 60s it didn't take long for the trail tread to start getting lots of traffic! A great big THANK YOU to all our volunteers that contribute to the success of the Smithville Lake MTB and Hiking Trails!

November 21st Workday

It started out early and a little chilly. Cold air from the Missouri River valley seeped into the crevices of Wyandotte County Lake Park and brougt with it the fog. We had a record of 68 volunteers show up to build some new single track and work some on the bridle trails.

The weather slowly warmed through the day and the fog eventually burned off. The sun finally came out towards the end of the day. There were two crews working on the upper and two working the lower trail of Phase One, one crew started the connector trail to the fisherman's trail which is actually part of phase two. We also had a crew lengthening a few of the switchbacks on the bridle trail trying to improve the descent from the old gazebo to the bottom of the dam.

Let the next phase begin! Workday on Saturday, November 7

We've done a crazy amount of scouting for phase 3 and think this section will turn out exactly as we had hoped. The plan is for a beginner friendly trail with lots of flow, minimal turns, and lots of smiles. Once finished, there will be a beginner loop approx. 2 miles long with a .75 mile alternate technical line along the rock face similar to the existing Wudchuk Run. Check out the updated trail map on the right hand side of the page.

Get your dirt on!
